I May Be Small…

Tuesday 8 September 2009

Hey Julius,

Your great aunt Becky got you a cool shirt from Catalina Island that says, “I May Be Small, But I’m Still The Man,” - here are some photos of you wearing it! Also your Grandmother Velara bought you a hooded towel, and a personalized outfit with your name on it for when you’re a few months older (I’ll take a picture of you wearing it when you can fit it). The shirt already fits you well enough to photograph you wearing it, so here you go! You look soooo cute! I love the shirt on you! Be sure to tell them thank you, son :)

Reflecting on this moment

Sunday 6 September 2009

Hello lovely Julius,

The most common question I get asked these days is, “How does it feel to be a mom?” The answer can best be explained by an internal conversation I often have with nature. I’ll do my best to explain.

Earlier today you cried up a storm, so I took an office chair outside on the porch and listened to the rain with you in my arms. Listening to sounds of rain dancing between leaves of the trees to the ground soothed your cries and put you to sleep. I closed my eyes along with you to imagine how the rain must have sounded from your perspective. For a while there, it sounded like white noise. And from a higher consciousness point of view, it was out of this world. I can’t help but wonder if there is a possibility that maybe the reason rain calms you down is because you’ve heard it before. Humans were born with a desire to seek knowledge. We all have questions. When it comes to understanding life and how we were created, the answers have and will always be debated.

As you slept, I watched the squirrels climb the trees with their sharp fingernails. Then I watched the blank white, grey sky feed the earth with nutrients. Then at the little grass movements, sparkling randomly over the yard. Then at the green weeds spiraling beside the sidewalk. Then at the red cardinal perched on a bronze bar eating the birdseed. Then the Japanese oak tree that had a bug crawling on a fragile red leaf. And during those moments, I said thank you. I don’t know who or what god is. But I know that squirrels can climb. And that they learned it. And I know the sky has color. And it came from light. And I know that grass reacts to water droplets. And I know that all life is - is a chain reaction to something. And I know that life is resilient, even around concrete. And I know that birds are attracted to the smell of food just like the moon is attracted to our gravity. And I know that bugs learn to crawl on what is pleasing to them, regardless of culture or religion.

So I said thank you. And then I said thank you again. I said thank you to the urge that squirrels get to climb. I said thank you to the spectrum of light that comes from the sun millions of miles away to create color. I said thank you to the water for agreeing to leave the space within the gas of the clouds to land on the grass. I thanked the weeds for poking their heads and saying hello - for being resilient. Hello, I recognize you. I said thank you to the bird for co-existing on the porch with us without fear, aggression, or need to defend. I said thank you to the reason bugs learn to crawl, walk, and fly in the first place. It’s a constant progression, wanting to grow and move forward, to reach for the next step. And I kept saying thank you, to everyone, with great attention to a combination of spacetime and love for building the men who drove to work to build the bricks on the side of the house.

I don’t have to wonder if anyone heard my thanks. The fact that you are here and in my arms is more than enough proof for me. You are a miracle. One day I’m confident you’ll understand the odds - and will grow to have the same appreciation and awe that I do. The same way that scientists understand math is the same way I understand your existence. I grok a lot of it, and yet… that there are plenty of answers far beyond reach… all the more reason to keep us motivated to reach our arms forward. It is for this inate purpose that I believe all of us humans find time to take a moment to create a thought which leads to a crossroads where a choice is formed. From that choice comes a reflection and with growth, greater understanding of consequences and future chain reactions. The more knowledge we gain in life, the better informed our decisions because we have higher odds of predicting the most benefitial outcome for all involved. Choices lead to actions. We make a choice and our brain processes it. So when we decide to learn to crawl, it all starts with a thought. At this stage in your life, dear Julius, I suspect your thoughts are mostly about discovery and exploration. Choices and actions will come later.

Most of all, I thanked whoever or whatever… or however the maker of the sun and moon decides to understand those thoughts… could hear me… for bringing you into the world.

You were conceived out of love. And you were born amongst friends. The next time we go outside, let’s say hello to our new companions and plant a gift.

How does it feel for me to be a mom? It feels like discovering how grass grows EVERY time I look at you. We’re in this together, buddy. And I love every part of it, even the most challenging of moments.

I love you.

Above is a photo of you wearing your new outfit while hanging out on a Boppy Pillow! Be sure to say thank you to my cousin Cammie who gave you a pair of shoes and a gift card at Babys ‘R Us. I used the gift card to get these things for you and you REALLY seem to like them! The outfit can be worn for another two months which is great! Room to grow!

Getting you to sleep

Saturday 5 September 2009

Julius,

Every day and every night, we rock you to sleep in the rocking chair. So far you don’t seem to like sleeping in the bassinet since you’ll cry after being placed in there. We’re not too keen on letting you sleep in the bed with us since there is an increased chance of us accidentally rolling over you or suffocating you at night… so we rock you… and we rock you… and we rock you… when we rock you to sleep, you love it! You will actually SLEEP! Sometimes we try to be clever by placing you in the bassinet AFTER you have fallen asleep, but you’re too smart. Shucks.

You’re three weeks old and we still haven’t figured out how to transition you to the bassinet quite yet. The good news is that you’re beginning to tell the difference to day and night. We keep the lights low and don’t play with you at night, and we turn on the lights and play with you in the day time. It’s been difficult setting a pattern routine to get you to sleep because unfortunately there are nights you get horrible gas from swallowing too much air which results in having to calm you down for a few hours. The Mylicon isn’t too great, so we recently picked up some Gripe Water which is all natural with herbs to help relieve gas. We’ll try it out and see if it helps! I love it when you’re happy… a fussy, gassy baby doesn’t feel good for either of us. We love you, sweetie. Hope your tummy feels better soon.

My sweet Julius!

Thursday 3 September 2009

Hey Julius,

Some of our friends and family who come to this website (or want to) have asked over and over how to spell the name “earth zizu” correctly. Often times it’s typed incorrectly and then family can’t find you which is bad for everyone. So today I took the liberty of using $40 of your baby money to buy you JuliusDior.com and JuliusDiorWilliams.com and pre-paid them for two years and they both forward here. I registered both of them in your name so that no one can ever claim them and I’ll be glad to fork the bill for the domains until you turn 18. Whatever you do after that is up to you.

So this site can officially be reached at JuliusDior.com! It’s easy to remember, yes?

A new page has been added to the site, “Our Baby Story,”  which describes how you were to conceived to how you were born.  Everything you could ever want to know about your delivery is on there, if you’re interested!

Here’s some photos of you sitting in front of a gorgeous Persian cloth that I bought from the Emporium downtown:

Julius,
Our good friends Kasha and David spent a long long time at a festival to earn you that big beautiful bear in this photo. It’s such a cool bear too!!! And Kasha found this cool tie-dyed onesie on e-bay and I really thought you’d like it…

I took this photo of you and couldn’t help but crack myself up. One of these days you’ll look back at this photo and laugh!!! And I’m confident you’ll love the bear as you grow older cause it’s soooo cushy!!!

Julius in his PlayPlace

Saturday 29 August 2009

Hey Julius!!
Your great-aunt Eileen (my aunt) was so cool and gave you a gift card for Target and we used that money to get you this awesome Bright Starts Baby’s PlayPlace and also a Diaper Genie II Elite (kind of like a deluxe diaper trash can that hides odors). You really seem to like the PlayPlace and I’m confident that when your body develops a little more, you’ll be able to reach some of the items above you. Right now you’re soooo tiny… your arms still can’t reach the top, however this little gym is cool because all the parts are re-arrangeable  and can be placed on the side.

And for the record, this was the very VERY first time you ever looked into a mirror. I am SO happy I caught part of it on camera! You really seemed to identify with yourself. How cool!

Julius in the nursery

Friday 28 August 2009

Hello Julius,

Here you are in your nursery upstairs chilling out on the baby changing table. Don’t worry, you’re strapped in safely and mommy was in the room with you when the photos were taken :)

Daddy and I had painted the walls several months ago (there’s a mural on the right side of the room with an island theme). We hope you like your space! This is so exciting watching you grow. You have been such a blessing in our lives. Sorry these entries are so short, we’ve been so busy watching you night and day that there hasn’t been lots of free time to do blog writing. But I want you to know I love you I love you I love you and we’re so happy you’re in our lives!

Umbilical cord comes off

Thursday 27 August 2009

Julius,
Today your umbilical cord stump came off and thought it would be interesting to photograph what it looked like. Neat huh? Now your little belly button can heal nicely. We often rub alcohol swabs around your belly button to keep it from getting infected, but you don’t seem to like that too much. Sorry baby, the doctor makes us!

Lovely Julius!
You love your swing but usually only if you have a blanket covering your legs. You sure are precious. I could just look at you and hold you all day… Wow.
